Dr. G. Allen Mitchell - AFES Acting Director & SALRM Associate Dean

The USDA established the Agricultural Experiment Station in 1906 on a site that was later to become part of the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. In 1931, the Experiment Station was transferred from federal ownership to the university, establishing the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (AFES) and its experimental farm as a unit of UAF. The AFES operates the Fairbanks Research Station ,which includes the Georgeson Botanical Garden; the Palmer Research Station; and the Delta Junction Research Site. Associated researchers focus on solving problems related to sustainable agriculture and forestry in relation to economic, social and cultural needs. State and federal agencies, private industry and the university sponsor and fund AFES research.
