Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management

Students may study various aspects of natural resources including forest sciences, land planning, outdoor recreation, environmental law, resources economics, soil science, horticulture, resource conservation, and environmental education.

Minimum Requirements for Degree:
Natural Resources Management consists of making and implementing decisions to develop, maintain or protect ecosystems to meet human needs and values. The natural resources management core curriculum provides students with a broad education in the various natural resources and related applied fields. The program is designed for students desiring careers in resources management or in other fields requiring knowledge of resources management, for students planning advanced study, and for people wanting to be better informed citizens. Students can tailor programs to enhance their person depth or breadth in a given field of interest.The degree program stresses field and laboratory activities and the application of knowledge. Internships and work-study arrangements are often available for qualified students.

Forestry Option

Department of Forest Sciences--Specializing in forest inventory, protection, harvesting, utilization and regeneration necessary to manage forests. The Forestry option lets students focus on the multi-resource management of forests and associated ecosystems for the sustained production of goods and services, and to prepare for forestry related employment. The forestry option is accredited by the Society of American Foresters

Department of Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences-- The Plant, Animal and Soil Science option offers opportunities for scientific study and education in areas such as: field and greenhouse plant production. domestication and propagation of native plants, revegetation, domestic and native animal production, and agriculture and ecological aspects of soil science.

Resources Option

Department of Resources Management--The Resources option emphasizes responsible stewardship in the management of multiple resources that occur in natural systems. It concentrates on the management of multiple resources that occur in natural systems and encourages creativity through a balanced interdisciplinary education emphasizing the natural and social sciences.

Minor in Natural Resources Management

A minor in Natural Resources Management requires completion of NRM 101 and an additional 15 credits from other NRM courses, 6 credits must be upper division. The minor program must be approved by an NRM advisor.


Master of Science in Natural Resources Management

SALRM offers a flexible and diverse program for students wishing to pursue graduate studies in natural resources. Students can explore many facets of Natural Resources Management via faculty-directed research. We encourage you to contact a faculty member whose research interest parallels your own. NRM thesis research must address resource problems at high latitudes. Past graduate research centered on biological and physical aspects of land management in Alaska in relation to land ownership, land use planning, economic analysis, and competing resources needs.
